The Lonely Street

Walking on a lonely street Pacing slowly on aching feet The flickering streetlights tell the tale Of a time that had long gone stale Can’t decipher the glory of the past Or the present that had come at last A future that is too bleak to see Or a better life for all that is to be Thousands have come and gone Has left this street worn and alone The tar reveals the wounded stones No lights within the lamp shade cones As though time had stood still Awaiting the change in the citizen’s will An historic location for people’s glare No redressing had left it bare Was it its fault it lasted so long? Couldn’t have got worse for this furlong A new tar coat would otherwise appear Maybe ten times every year Is it worth it to live forever? In a life that’s more a lake than a river All for a hope that things will be fine The good old times will be back in line But the lonely street will always be A historic place for all to see All its feelings smashed beneath The place that adorns the citizen’s wreath! The flickering streetlights still tell the tale Of a time that had long gone stale Maybe time would yet stand still As the lonely street awaits a change in the citizens will!
